Skip the Infant Carrier and go to Convertible Car Seat?

We are looking for car seat options for our soon-to-be newborn. I have read that you are absolutely not supposed to let your baby sleep in their infant carrier other than in the car because it’s easy for them to twist their head weird and die of SIDS. If this is the case why even buy one? I don’t want to risk this happening. The main argument I hear for infant carriers is that you don’t have to wake them up to take them out of the car. Well you should be waking them up as soon as you get into the house anyways and taking them out of there so it seems a wash to me so…

I’m wondering if anyone has skipped the infant carrier and gone straight to the convertible car seat?

If so is it very inconvenient not having an infant carrier? Like even for just running into the library or store to grab something.
